I am a historian working at the intersection of technology and the human sciences, with a focus on the circulation of knowledge between Central Europe and North America in the 20th century. My work challenges the division between the "two cultures" of STEM and the humanities by showing how European philosophy was reinterpreted through Cold War technologies of communication and control.
My current book project is a history of systems theory, an interdisciplinary field of study that looked for common principles uniting organisms, machines, and social organizations. I argue for the importance of systems thinking to Central European emigre thinkers navigating cultural and disciplinary differences. My research interests also include science fiction, psychoanalysis, parapsychology, techno-mysticism, and gendered technologies.
